Put on by Jeff Mach, this is his last non-Wicked Faire event for some time. Proceeds will be going to SPARC, Summer Program for Academic Reach and Creativity. It is a nonprofit summer program for gifted adolescents, founded by people closely involved with WickedEvents. It is On June 28th and tickets are $20 in advance, $30 at the door - you can't beat this price for the performers who will be there.

The premise: "The Totally Normal Event takes place in a universe much like our own, only one in which most fantasy, mythology, and science fiction is essentially true. The idea is that, under the guise of being some sort of convention for normal humans who dress up, we're actually those creatures of myth, disguised. Not disguised very well, mind you, but still.

Within the event itself is an enormous world of entertainments, performances, workshops, pleasures, panels, parties, and entertainments.

And we're working on a Secret Project to extend the event outside the confines of time and place..."

Performers include The Dresden Dolls, Sxip and the Luminescent Orchestrii, Freezepop, Barry Louis Polisar, Voltaire, Isaac Bonewits, The White Elephant Burlesque Society (which is worth going just to see them), David W. Jacobsen, Psyche Corporation, Lilith Lore, Captain Velocity, Mary Cyn, Daniel the Jester, The Mighty Mike Saga, Aaron Glotfelter (the Erotic Hypnotist) and Princess Sunshine. This is in addition to all the parties being held by the Tribes (of which there are four: The Makers [mad scientists], The Takers [evil overlords], The Hedonists [do I need to explain that one?], and The Talesenders [Harnessing the power of story] and other smaller happenings including a The Silent Auction, Rock Band Ball, Human Bingo, Screening of Straight On Till Morning, and many, many more.

For those with extra cash, there (as always at events) will be loads of vendors! They include: Speampunk Weaponary, Face/Body painting, Ruff Doggie Styles, Sculptoons, BondcoDSM, Oxelot Cyberlox, Nicholas Leather, Secret Shop, Christina Yoder, Queen of the Cat People, Ishta Arts, The Pointy Eared Artisan, For Your Nymphomation, Radiance Bound, Horror Show Jack, DragonWeave Jewelry, The Drum and Whistle, Nightshade Leather, The Five Wits, Griffons Claw Armoury, Brute Force Leather, Private Island Toys, Crystals, Grendel's Den, David Sklar, and Dragonflame Archery.

And don’t forget the after-parties, they rock!

Also, there will be some pre-event happenings on Friday night as the staff and many, many minions will be there early to set up and there are parties in the works.

Looking for something to do next Saturday night? Try giving the Green Room a shot. This is a pretty cool place that people who dig music and want a chill atmosphere to hang out in, need to start checking out. The kind of place we need more of on the Jersey side. So drop by and give em some encouragement. And it's a 5 minute walk from the PATH station!

This will be my second DJ session at the Green Room. Expect an onslaught of great music, new and old, played on a boomin sound system and a great crowd of people.

Lots of Rock, Jazz and RnB for starts and it'll get dancier later in the evening.

I'll be showing up 8-ish which seems to mean 9. And I'll be going until a song or two after they tell me to cut it out and go home (probably around 2AM)

Again, this goes down on Saturday May 3.

The Green Room is located at 203 Frank E Rodgers Blvd which is pretty much a five minute walk from the Harrison PATH station (turn to your left when you get out of the PATH station and walk 7 blocks and you'll find this place on the left-across the street from the Wendy's and the QuikMart).

Hope to see you there.
Here's hoping that the good folks in law enforcement can take this lead and finally bring Chris home!

neighbors have decided to burn wood all day and night...

my breathing is really taking a nosedive....

eyes getting red too...

there used to be a time where you could go to your neighbor - "hey, my kid has bad breathing, would you mind lightening up on the wood smoke?" And the neighbor would apologize to you! saying, "gee, I am so sorry, I hope he is ok. We don't need to use the fireplace, don't worry." Now, in our society that has placed willful ignorance on the mantle, instead of some basic human decency, much less Judeo-Christian values of caring and charity, now it is almost an honored achievement to tell other people to jump in a lake...

here is the letter to the editor of my local paper...

We have all now come to learn of the dangers of second hand smoke. Here is the webpage about it from the American Lung Association:
http://www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=35422

There is another kind of "second hand smoke" that enters our lives. It is from other forms of combustion. These include the burning of leaves and wood smoke.

Combustion is combustion. The problems that it produces from cigarettes is not significantly different from that produced by burning wood. If our society has now recognized the health problems of burning cigarettes, it is not too far of a leap to extend the concern to burning wood.

This website illustrates some of the dangers:

http://burningissues.org/car-www/index.html

I used to love the smell of burning wood. Now, as one of the many victims of asthma in our society, it is no longer a luxury that I can afford.

Asthma affects approxiametly 20 million Americans or about 6.8% of the population. In XXXXX, with a population of about 54,000, that figure works out to be about 3700 people. Though, since XXXXX is in a highly industrialized area, the figures are probably higher.

And here is an article which notes that wood smoke aggravates asthma:
http://www.thereporter.com/letters/ci_7435068

Quoting from the article, "It is well documented that particulate matter pollution can adversely affect lung function and is a health hazard for those with asthma and lung disease who cannot go outside during the winter when neighbors are burning wood."

In addition to its dangers outright, we already have 70,000 chemicals in our air and water, adding just that extra bit of smoke to already very polluted air. There is quite a bit of belief that rising asthma rates are related to pollution.

The science gets debated for many reasons, some of which have nothing to do with science, but with the agenda of those doing the testing. The chemical industry does not want to be legally responsible for causing asthma and other illnesses in people. They sponsor science to disprove the connections.

Everyone loves the beauty of a fire on a cold winter night. In XXXXX, with at least 3700 people with asthma, in an already polluted environment, this could significantly impact the breathing of people right next door to you.

Whether it is a small child or an elderly person, or just someone with particularly bad asthma whose breathing will be affected, I urge members of the public to consider restricting or eliminating burning wood.

Thank you for your time.

Respectfully,

We are regularly bombarded with reports of disaster and tragedy in the daily news. Catastrophes like earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, violent crimes, and terrorism are so common and routine that many of us have become numb to the stories. Without a heightened awareness, focused concern, and effective planning, we have lost the edge that can save lives. Do you know what you should do to protect your family during a disaster? Does your neighbor have the knowledge required to survive a catastrophic event? Part of the solution is rooted in common sense, but much more depends upon effectively applying learned survival skills. Americans need a helpful reference tool--a "Swiss army knife" for handling today's threats. Jay's book, "Preparing for the Worst: A Comprehensive Guide to Protecting Your Family from Terrorist Attacks, Natural Disasters, and Other Catastrophes" is that tool.

A former U.S. Marine and Desert Storm veteran, Schaefer-Jones (the author) has experienced calamity firsthand. He is also a concerned husband and the father of three young children. While considering how he would personally handle a disastrous event close to home, he came to realize that a comprehensive "how-to" guide was not available--until now.

As of now I self record all parts. But for stage purposes I sing and play guitar. I need 1-2 GOOD guitarists, a bassist, and a small drum circle. I've been sitting on this project for a while now, and I'm starting t oreally feel the urge to get onstage and bring everyone into the cosmos. Theres a lot of other aspects to the vision, live and filmed sketch comedy, bellydancers, firespinners. But lets start off small. The music is very tribal, worldy, spiritual and raw. I'm looking to get together at least once a week, and then playing out as much as possible. I'm in the central NJ area. I'm looking for people with a strong sense of rhythm, good lead skills, and good imrpove ability. You can check out some of the jams on www.myspace.com/sagarocasegu

I actually know the answer, but have heard some funny explanations over the years and was hoping to hear some more. If anyone posts the right answer, don't mention it, I want to see how long we can keep the thread going. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, Ironbound is a neighborhood in Newark that at various times was the Slavic, Italian, and Portugeuse community. It is also home to most of those opening shots for "the Sopranos".

A friend of mine is moving out of the state, so I found a list of a few items and added quite a bit to it. I hope it makes you laugh, too. Anything to add?

************

You Know You're from New Jersey When...

* More than one of the following were shot in your high school: A movie, a sitcom, a music video, and a student.
* You have a female friend named Bruiser and a male friend named Pretty...and they went to prom together.
* You'll walk across the mall to find a working escalator rather than trudge down the stairs.
* You (and everyone around you) stiffen a bit as you approach the end of the escalator ride.
* You know that the only people who call it "Joisey" are from New York or Texas, and almost everyone from Jersey pronounces it "JURzee."
* "The Oranges" are not fruit. "The Meadowlands" are a swamp. And you can't take the Jersey out of the "PNC" Arts Center.
* You cannot drive thirty miles without passing a major pile-up, which often involves a Kenworth and an out-of-state BMW.
* You know how to merge.
* You know New York drivers are maniacs, but their car speeds max at 40 mph.
* You know Pennsylvania drivers are afraid Leatherface will catch up to them if they go below 115 mph.
* If you can't see the stars, just drive for a few miles and you'll be in the wilderness again.
* You know highways that have 35-cent and $6.00 tolls one hundred feet apart.
* You can throw a quarter and dime like ninja shuriken as you whiz through the toll booth at 45 mph...and you have to, because you have to cross twelve lanes of traffic on the other side to get to the exit 60 feet away.
* Everyone has a light. Further, every Jersey Boy owns a zippo that he can open, light, and close with two fingers.
* You've been seriously injured at Action Park.
* Your friends taught you well; "never sit below the kid with the ice cream cone," "never touch the yellow snow," and "never, under any circumstances, look at my sister that way again."
* You have either blown a tire or lost a shoe (or both) in a pothole.
* You know that the only difference between the tunnel with no light at the end and the Parkway is that the Parkway has rest stops.
* It's "Great Adventure," not "Six Flags" and you went there on a school trip.
* You know the blue/red track always beats the green/yellow track on Rolling Thunder.
* You know someone who knows someone who knows someone who was attacked by a spirit/monster/rabid sparrow on a Weird NJ trip.
* You've known the way to Seaside Heights since you were seven.
* You remember when a soap truck collided with two other trucks and demolished the Denville/Route 80 bridge in a bubbling disaster.
* You know what "Ironbound" means.
* You know someone with a 30' backyard and a 25' above-ground pool.
* You've eaten breakfast at a diner (particularly while stoned, drunk, crying, or dressed like a freak) at 3am.
* You know a hard roll with butter is a good, cheap breakfast.
* You know it's prepackaged meat...and it's safer that way.
* You know to never drink tap water, to hold your breath when you go over bridges, and not to open your eyes in Staten Island or they'll turn brown.
* Whenever you park, there's a Camaro within three spots of you.
* You remember that the "Two Guys" were from Harrison.
* You know that the state isn't one big oil refinery.
* You know that the state isn't all farmland.
* You suspect that the state is 5% mall parking.
* You have a prejudice against radio DJs.
* You remember when Hoboken was poor.
* You remember when Jersey City was safe.
* You remember the Garden State Plaza when it was just three magic beans next to the Paramus Park Mall.
* You looked for rats out the windows of the PATH train.
* You smile knowingly at tourists who complain to the police that a homeless person tore their clothes off, slathered them in grape jelly and licked it all off after being given five dollars.
* You know what town Jon Bon Jovi is from.
* You know someone who still calls it "Slayerville."
* You know what a "jug handle" is.
* You can properly negotiate a Circle.
* You knew that the last two questions had to do with driving.
* Being wedged in traffic between four speeding 18-wheeled trucks doesn't frighten you, and you don't understand why other people think it should.
* You've been down Annie's Road.
* You've stopped for a deer, bear, cow, or large dog that tried to stare down your car.
* You've been seriously injured by a paintball.
* Double or triple parking isn't illegal as long as no one is coming.
* WaWa is a convenience store.
* Someone caught you singing in your car.
* You've wondered what the giant Lumberjack on 440 has to do with carpeting.
* You know coffee is only as good as the person making it...but IHOP is different from all others.
* You know, at 4am on a Sunday, you can have dinner, alcohol, a movie, and cigarettes delivered to your house.
* You know there are no "beaches" in Jersey - there's "The Shore," and you don't go "to the shore," you go "down the shore," and when you are there, you're not "at the shore," you are down the shore."
* You know anyone who precedes "Parkway" with "Garden State" is a tourist.
* You can identify three cultural groups in any five block radius that feel at least two other groups have invaded their personal space.
* You visit the traveling carnival in more than three towns.
* You know nine pizza joints on one street aren't enough (because there are more than nine kinds of pizza).
* You know "Piney" isn't referring to a tree.
* Even your school cafeteria made good Italian subs, and you call it a "sub" not a "submarine sandwich" or worse yet, a "hoagie" or a "hero."
* Bad Chinese food can kill someone.
* You remember the song from the Palisades Park commercials.
* You went on the Palisades Mall Ferris wheel before it began sinking into the earth.
* You know that "Acme" is an actual store, not just a Warner Bros creation.
* You know that this is the only "New" state that doesn't require "New" to identify it (...Mexico, ...York, ...Hampshire).
* You know how to translate this conversation: "Jaeet yet?" "No, Jews?"
* You can identify a person's hometown by their choice of slang.
* You only go to New York City for day trips, and you only call it "The City."
* You know that a "White Castle" is the name of BOTH a fast food chain AND a fast food sandwich.
* You consider a corned beef sandwich with lettuce and mayo a sacrilege.
* It's "mootsalel," not "mot-zer-RELLA," and use of the words "string cheese" is a punishable offense.
* Even your diner waitress pronounces names of food correctly in their native tongues.
* You know that all diners have the same menu, and you know never to order steak, grits, seafood, or hash if you wish to live.
* In the 80's you wore your hair REALLY high.
* You know that a large puddle with level ground on either side may contain a pocket that will swallow a Honda.
* You still own a pair of ripped jeans.
* You don't think "What exit" is very funny.
* You think it's perfectly normal for a bar to be situated on the island of a major highway.
* You know that the real first "strip shopping center" in the country is Route 22.
* You are still searching for the Route 46 WEST exit from Route 17 South.
* You know that people from 609 area code are "a little different."
* You know that no respectable Jerseyan goes to Princeton - that's for tourists.
* It's not 95. It's the Turnpike. 95 goes down the coast. The Turnpike goes through Jersey.
* The Jets-Giants game has started fights at your school, work or local bar.
* You live within 20 minutes of at least three malls, six movie theaters and nine diners.
* You can see the Manhattan skyline from some part of your town.
* You recognize that smell, but can't describe it. It's like fish, garbage, roses and salt. We call it "Eau de Staten Island."
* You have no idea what Newark and Elizabeth smell like, but you know it isn't oil.
* No, you've never wondered what's buried in the Meadowlands, but you have seen a brush fire there.
* You would never go to the Pine Barrens alone.
* You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers.
* Every year, you had at least one boy in your class or office named Tony, and one girl named Marie.
* You know where every "clip" shown in the Sopranos opening credits is.
* You've gotten on the wrong highway trying to get out of Willowbrook Mall.
* You know there is a "new" and an "old" 17...but the only (ONLY) thing on old 17 is Faire.
* If you can safely navigate the entrance and exit to the Garden State Plaza, you should be qualified to pilot a fighter jet.
* You remember a time before the 17/4 cloverleaf when the intersection was one of the most dangerous in the country.
* You've eaten a Boardwalk cheesesteak with vinegar fries.
* Everybody's grandmother makes the best lasagna, and you know not to forget it.
* You have a favorite Atlantic City casino.
* You have walked 1.99 miles to school.
* After the airports were closed, your school finally released you due to inclement weather...after which point you walked 1.99 miles home because the roads were unsafe to drive.
* Someone one your bus was permanently injured through their own stupidity (example: hanging out the window and clipping a mailbox)
* You were one of the cool kids on the Avenue or the Corner.
* You start planning for Memorial Day weekend in February.
* You know that people from North Jersey go to
Seaside Heights, and people from Central Jersey go to Belmar and people from South Jersey go to Wildwood. It can be no other way.
* You were not raised in New Jersey. You were raised in either North Jersey, Central Jersey or South Jersey.
* You don't consider Newark or Camden to actually be part of the state.
* Trenton is to New Jersey as Washington DC is to Connecticut. It's an important place, south of us.
* When you say you're going to Englishtown you mean you're going to the flea market, not the town.
* You know that asking a Jersey girl of Italian descent if she knows the mob can be more dangerous to your person than asking the mob if they know any Jersey girls of Italian descent.
* You've been in a mosh pit for an elevated garage band.
* You're happy to pay New Jersey's high car insurance premiums because it keeps all the people who can't drive from moving to the state.
* You know two towns, each a mile wide, where the average salary differs between them by several hundred thousand dollars.
* You aren't afraid of bear, but you are afraid of spiders.

And finally...

* You NEVER, NEVER pump your own gas.

The light bulb, phonograph (record player) and motion picture projector were invented by Thomas Edison in his Menlo Park, NJ laboratory.

We also boast the first town ever lit by incandescent bulbs.

The first airmail (to Chicago) was started from Keyport, NJ.

The first phonograph records were made in Camden, NJ.

New Jersey is home to the Miss America pageant held in Atlantic City.

The game Monopoly, played all over the world, names the streets of their playing board after the actual streets in Atlantic City.

And Atlantic City has the longest boardwalk in the world.

New Jersey has the largest petroleum containment area outside of the Middle East countries.

The first Indian reservation was in New Jersey, in the Watchung Mountains.

New Jersey has the tallest water-tower in the world.

New Jersey had the first Medical Center, in Jersey City.

The Pulaski SkyWay, from Jersey City to Newark, was the first skyway highway.

Tunnel)

The first baseball game was played in Hoboken, NJ, which is also the birthplace of Frank Sinatra.

The first intercollegiate football game was played in New Brunswick in 1889 ? Rutgers played Princeton.

The first Drive-In Movie theater was opened in Camden, NJ.

New Jersey is home to both of "NEW YORK'S" Pro Football Teams!

The first radio station and broadcast was in Paterson, NJ.

All New Jersey natives: Sal Martorano, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Jason Alexander, Queen Latifa, Susan Sarandon, Connie Francis, Shaq, Judy Blume, Aaron Burr, Joan Roberson, Ken Kross, Dionne Warwick, Sarah Vaughn, Budd Abbott, Lou Costello, Alan Ginsberg, Normal Mailer, Marilynn McCoo, Flip Wilson, Alexander Hamilton, Whitney Houston, Eddie Mooney, Linda McElroy, Eileen Donnely, Grover Cleveland, Woodrow Wilson, Walt Whitman, Jerry Lewis, Tom Cruise, Richard Wojewodzki, Joyce Kilmer, Bruce Willis, Caesar Romero, Lauryn Hill, Ice-T, Nick Adams, Nathan Lane, Sandra Dee, Danny DeVito, Richard Conti, Joe Pesci, Joe Piscopo, Robert Blake, John Forsyth, Meryl Streep, Loretta Swit, Norman Lloyd, Paul Simon, Jerry Herman, Gorden McCrae, Kevin Spacey, John Travolta, Phyllis Newman, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Eva Marie Saint, Elisabeth Shue, Zebulon Pike, James Fennimore Cooper, Admiral Wm. Halsey, Jr., Dave Thomas (Wendy's), William Carlos Williams, Ray Liotta, Robert Wuhl, Paul Robeson, Ernie Kovacs, Joseph Macchi and ? of course? Francis Albert Sinatra and "Uncle Floyd".

You know you're from Jersey when?

You don't think of fruit when people mention "The Oranges"

You know that it's called Great Adventure, not Six Flags.

A good, quick breakfast is a hard roll with butter.

You've known the way to Seaside Heights since you were seven.

You've eaten at a Diner, when you were stoned or drunk, at 3 AM.

You know that the state isn't one big oil refinery.

At least three people in your family still love Bruce Springsteen and you know the town Jon Bon Jovi is from.

You know what a "jug handle" is.

You know that WaWa is a convenience store.

You know that the state isn't all farmland.

You know that there are no "beaches" in New Jersey, there's the shore and you don't go to the shore, you go "down the shore". And when you are there, you're not "at the shore", you are "down the Shore".

You know how to properly negotiate a Circle.

You knew that the last sentence had to with driving.

You know that this is the only "New?" state that doesn't require "New" to identify it (like, try Mexico, York, Hampshire ? doesn't work, does it?)

You know that a "White Castle" is the name of BOTH a fast food chain AND a fast food sandwich.

You consider putting mayo on a corned beef sandwich a sacrilege.

You don't think "What exit" is very funny.

You know that people from the 609 area code are "a little different". Yes, they are!

You know that no respectable New Jerseyan goes to Princeton ? that's for "out of staters".

The Jets-Giants game has started fights at your school or local bar.

You live within 20 minutes of at least three different malls.

You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers.

Every year you had at least one kid in your class names Tony.

You know the location of every clip shown in the Sopranos opening credits.

You've gotten on the wrong highway trying to get out of the mall.

You know that people from North Jersey go to Seaside Heights, people from Central Jersey go to Belmar and people from South Jersey go to Wildwood. It can be no other way.

You weren't raised in New Jersey ? you were raised in either North Jersey, Central Jersey or South Jersey.

You don't consider Newark or Camden to actually be part of the state.

You remember the stores Korvette's, Two Guys, Rickel's, Channel, Bamburgers and Orbach's.

You have a boardwalk cheese steak and vinegar fries.

You start planning for Memorial Day weekend in February.

And finally?you've NEVER, NEVER pumped your own gas.
